Award winning artist Melanie Fleet is an intuitive, boundary-pushing artist whose work lives in the space between strength and vulnerability. Some bodies of work feel bold and defiant; others are tender, fragile, and quietly exposed. She allows each collection to dictate its own emotional tone, trusting the process and the story it wants to tell.
Working across photography, assemblage art, and painting, Mel creates one-off pieces, large-scale murals, and thoughtfully developed collections. Her practice is fluid and expansive — layering texture, found objects, imagery, and paint to explore identity, memory, power, longing, and the human experience. No two works are the same, yet all carry her distinct ability to make the fleeting feel tangible.
Mel has been creating art her entire life. What began as instinct and personal expression evolved into a dedicated business four years ago, transforming lifelong passion into a professional practice. Since then, her work has continued to grow in scale, depth, and confidence — while still holding onto the curiosity and emotional honesty that shaped her from the beginning.
Her studio and gallery are based in the iconic Ministry of Works Building on Taupō Quay in Whanganui — a space that mirrors her practice: layered with history, character, and possibility. From this creative hub, Mel Fleet of Fleeting Fancy continues to produce work that invites reflection, challenges convention, and honours both the fragile and the fierce within us all.
